Sergeant at Arms: Tom Rumbaugh
Shasta Mast announced upcoming programs (see here)
Program: Rob Hovis presented our speaker, Holmes County Commissioner Joe Miller.
Rob's introduction included the information that Joe's career has included being General Manager and CEO of Der Dutchman in Walnut Creek, and operating a bed & breakfast. Joe told Rob of the time a tourist came and ate heartily at Der Dutchman, then returned to her bus and peacefully expired.
Joe gave an overview of the issues facing the county. The General Fund comprises approximately $10,000,000, to which sales tax contributes $4,000,000, real estate tax $3,000,000, and fines and fees contribute $3,000,000.
Cost elements include:
Sheriff and Jail
Jail Food Service
Jail Inmate Medical Expenses
Medway Drug Enforcement
Courthouse
Indigent Defense (Joe indicated this cost is increasing)
Capital Improvements (Roof for the jail, foundation of the Brenner building, fairgrounds, Health Department.)
Joe pointed out that the County Commissioners are not responsible for roads and bridges; these are the responsibility of the County Engineer and are funded by vehicle registration fees and a gas tax.
Questions from the floor addressed infrastructure issues and the need for a new fairground location.
